Seattle Nurses Make Prom Dream a Reality

With a little glitter and a lot of help from the nurses at Seattle Children’s Hospital (SCH), one patient didn’t have to miss out on prom.

Sparkling stars, ice cream sundaes, formal wear, and IV poles dotted the scene at the “Night Among the Stars” prom held recently in the inpatient cancer unit at SCH.

How it Began

Led by a team of nurses and inspired by Mairissa Peoples, a high school athlete from Montana who was missing her prom, this event dazzled patients, their families and even the staff.

The celebration was inspired by Peoples, who last year found out she had a malignant tumor in her pelvis. Peoples was taken to SCH for radiation therapy, where the staff there planned a floor-wide celebration.

During the event, SCH nursing staff found local vendors to donate cupcakes, ice cream sundaes, dresses, and even the services of a professional photographer. RNs arrived in pink-chiffon nursing tops for the evening.
