Description:
Provides care to patients before, during, and after surgery or delivery. Specific activities include physical assessment, preoperative teaching, and preparation, administration and maintenance of anesthesia. Responsible for constantly monitoring every function of the patient's body while the patient is anesthetized. Provides care during the recovery period and as part of follow-up monitoring during the postoperative course

Private and public facilities: hospital ORs (operating rooms), ambulatory surgery centers, pain clinics, labor and delivery, physician offices
Characteristics:
Autonomy and independence; direct-patient care; patient monitoring and care management in PACU (postanesthesia care unit) and ICU (intensive care unit); working relationships with physicians, nurses, and students
Drawbacks:
Irregular hours, on-call responsibilities, legal liability, contract issues and competition, stress and pressure, potential health hazards
Desirable skills:
Psychomotor skill; pharmacologic knowledge; refined skills in assessing, interviewing, and teaching; comfort with technology; stress management; flexibility and commitment
