Name: Military Nursing
Description: Provide all aspects of traditional nursing care and practice in both peace and war-time settings through various branches of the military service (e.g., army, navy, air force). Classifications include active duty, reserves, civilian employment
Practice roles: Staff and supervision in all medical specialties. General and advanced practice opportunities available
Characteristics: Often given broader range of responsibility and offered broader scope of practice than in civilian practice settings, RN/BSN enters active duty as an officer
Drawbacks: May be called for global war-time duty, time commitment involved with active duty and reserves
Desirable skills: Critical care, OR and trauma experience highly desirable but not necessary
Education: RN with BSN required for active duty. BSN not required for reserves and civilian employment
Employers: US Government, contract agencies for civilian employment
