  • The Registered Nurse is responsible for administering, monitoring, documenting and evaluating therapeutic interventions and regimens specific to their assigned patients.
  • The Registered Nurse is an expert in providing, directing or influencing the care of assigned patients, their families and significant others in a variety of settings.
  • The Registered Nurse provides comprehensive nursing services independently or collaboratively with clinical and administrative staff and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Through administration, education, research and theory-based clinical practice, the Registered Nurse advances the health care of their patients.
  • The incumbent must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to adult and geriatric patients in the assigned health care environment.
  • The individual must possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status, and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs, providing care as needed as described in policies and procedures.
  • This RN is also responsible and accountable for maintaining training required, attend/complete all mandatory review programs, and take responsibility for attending in-service and continuing education activities with continuous progression in knowledge and skills in critical care practice.
  • This RN is required to actively participate in unit based performance improvement measures.
  • He/she may be assigned additional duties that reflect the educational, experiential and competency requirements outlined in the Dimensions of Practice:
  • Identifies physiological, psychological, social and environmental variable affecting the functional status of the critical care patient. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the various ages of adult and geriatric patients in the critical care area.
  • Interprets data obtained from observation, examination and monitoring. Completes patient's charting thru electronic health records.
  • Documents on approved VA forms/computer programs. Maintain confidentiality of patient information.

Work Schedule: Work schedule will be determined based on the needs of the Medical Center.5B is a 21-bed complex medicine/step down unit with cardiac monitoring availability by telemetry. Admissions are usually from but not limited to Medical / Surgical Subspecialties. Patient population is primarily adult and geriatric inpatients. Special services particular to this unit include care of patients with the following diagnoses:
  • COPD
  • Complications of diabetes
  • Neurological disorders
  • Renal hemodialysis
  • Cardiac disorders
  • Hospice/Palliative Care

6B is a 27-bed complex medicine unit with cardiac monitoring availability by telemetry. Patient population is primarily adult and geriatric inpatients. Special services particular to this unit include care of patients with the following diagnoses:
  • COPD
  • Complications of diabetes
  • Neurological disorders
  • Renal disorders
  • Cardiac disorders
  • Hospice/Palliative Care

Critical Care is a 8-bed unit specializing in the delivery of comprehensive medical and surgical care of patients who are under the care of the following surgical sub-specialties: General Surgery, Vascular/Thoracic Surgery, Orthopedics, Urology, ENT, and medical conditions. Patient population is adult and geriatric inpatients. Patient care focuses on direct patient care, education of the patient and the patient's family, and ensuring safety for the patients, visitors, and staff. Nurse who works closely with other nursing and medical and or surgical staff to endure that all patients in the critical care unit receive optimal care. With assistance will be able to diagnose, monitor and treat patient responses to life-threatening health problems and coordinate the care delivered by various health care providers. Responsible for administering, monitoring, documenting, and evaluating therapeutic interventions and regimens specific to critical care patients.
4B: Ambulatory Day Treatment Unit (ADTU) outpatient population consists of Oncology, Pulmonary, Hematology, Endocrinology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, General Medical, as well as surgical patients. The RNs administers medications, conscious sedation, IV medication, dressing changes and assists provider with emergent procedures per established policies, protocols and guidelines. RNs care for patients undergoing an endoscopic procedure requiring preparation and recovery.
4A: Mental Health Inpatient Unit is a 17 bed unit requiring the Registered Nurse to have experience that demonstrates possession of advanced psychiatric nursing skills and judgment in caring for Veterans with serious and persistent mental illnesses, addictions, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder and dementia.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications required.

Preferred Experience:
  • Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing from an NLNAC/CCNE accredited school of Nursing, Master's Degree in Nursing is highly preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of nursing experience in an acute care setting is preferred.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling, pushing, and sitting at a keyboard. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs and able to manage work activities in a highly technologically integrated work environment.None
