Job Objective: A brief overview of the position.
The Surgery Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a member of the General Surgery multidisciplinary health team providing direct patient care to General Surgery patients working within the scope of the Certified Nurse Practitioner License and hospital privileges. The NP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, consulting, and provides leadership to the organization and nursing profession.

Required: Masters Degree in Nursing and completion of Nurse Practitioner Program.
Required: California license as Advanced Nurse Practitioner including certification in relevant nursing specialty; California Nurse Practitioner Furnisher number; American Heart Association BLS and ACLS.
Required: Minimum 5 years relevant experience providing acute patient care in a surgical or similar setting.

Provide direct clinical services for pre- or post- operative patients on the On-Call General Surgery Service, under the supervision of the On-Call Surgeon.
Obtain patient health histories and complete physical examinations.
Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests. Demonstrate efficient use of hospital resources to meet patient call goals.
Explain necessity, preparation, nature, and anticipated effects of procedure(s) to patients, family members, staff, and healthcare learners
Perform approved therapeutic or diagnostic procedures based upon patients clinical status. Document patient preparation and response to procedure(s).
Formulate and implement treatment and discharge plans for acute surgical management in collaboration with the designated supervising attending physician(s). Use appropriate consultation or referral as necessary.
Document in medical record and appropriate narrative summaries.
Utilize prescriptive privileges. Document all prescriptions in patients medical record.
Assess patients for change in status and institute appropriate interventions. Initiate necessary emergency interventions to stabilize patients.
Provide family-centered care by communicating with the family regarding the changing healthcare needs of their loved one. Assess family adaptation, coping skills, and the need for Crisis or patient relations intervention.
Utilize current research and evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice. Incorporate clinical research findings in the development and implementation of standards of care. Support IRB approved clinical research/trials through a variety of activities including but not limited to: obtaining consent; ordering diagnostic tests; recording laboratory and diagnostic results; administering therapeutic interventions; and documenting and reporting patient outcomes including toxicities or adverse events. Enhance the body of knowledge of nursing or area of specialty through exchange of ideas and knowledge in professional oral presentations, posters, research activities and written publications.
Perform and participate in quality/safety/LEAN activities and clinical research. Serve as a clinical expert and leadership consultant to nursing, members of the healthcare team and to the larger community. Participate in the support accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities.
Identify educational needs of the patient and family and participate in teaching opportunities. Assess educational needs, plan, provide, and evaluate educational programs for nursing staff, interdisciplinary healthcare team members, and the community. Precept new Nurse Practitioners, other advanced practice nurses, and healthcare learners.
Participate in the development, review, and evaluation of Surgical Nurse Practitioner practice protocols within legal guidelines in compliance with EMC policies.
