Position Description In conjunction with the Nurse Manager, assumes responsibility for the care of patients on a nursing unit. In the absence of the Nurse Manager, assumes ultimate 24 hour responsibility for the care of patients on a nursing unit. Directs and administers the nursing care provided on a nursing unit. Supervises, evaluates, guides and counsels nursing staff in their work performance. Ensures that staffing patterns provide optimal delivery of nursing service. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of nursing theory and practice and principles, methods and techniques involved in providing nursing care, familiarity with organization and function of departments, policies, procedures and regulations and knowledge of principles of leadership and management. Delivery of patient care is individualized relative to age/developmental, psycho-socio-cultural patient treatment needs.
Demonstrates knowledge and skill in interpersonal relations, group dynamics, problem solving, interviewing, observation, counseling and teaching. Ability to evaluate and supervise other Nursing personnel and to use mature judgment in determining priorities of care and modification of assignments; ability to incorporate teaching and management principles. Knowledge, understanding and acceptance of the Philosophy and Policies of the Department of Nursing and Temple University Hospital are required. The Hospital Plan for Providing Nursing Care, together with the Standards of Operation, define the target populations for which services are anticipated and planned.
Education and Experience
BSN, or equivalent combination of education and experience, required. R.N. licensure in Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, or immediate eligibility. A minimum of 18 months clinical experience required. Management experience preferred.
Exempt, salaried position. The hours for the role are based upon the needs of the department for training and management. They are expected to be 10 or 12 hour days, during evenings or nights, approximately 40 hours per week.
