Position Summary

 The unit based educator is a registered professional nurse who demonstrates expertise in a specific area of clinical nursing and is responsible for developing, implementing, & evaluating a program of education for an assigned population.  Programming includes initial and ongoing staff competency (including a standardized unit-based orientation), as well as continued education as identified by needs assessments and regulatory requirement initiatives. Applies policies, procedures, standards, and regulations as appropriate to their populations.  The scope of the education will be determined through collaborative practice with unit management, educators, and advanced practice nurses to enhance the quality and cost effectiveness of patient care.  Prefer a RN with strong medical surgical experience with a cardiac focus and telemetry certification.

Education Requirements:

•             BSN Required

•             Master’s Degree Preferred


Work Experience:

Minimum 4 years experience in clinical specialty

License/Certifications  RN, BLS (from American Heart Association), ACLS

•             RN licensure in the State of Colorado

•             Specialty certification preferred

Position Duties


•             Ensures standardized unit-based orientation

•             Develops, plans, and implements initial and ongoing staff competency, noting non-compliance of staff

•             Coordinates all annual skills competencies assuring all staff are competent to practice in assigned areas

•             Facilitates the application of regulatory standards within the area of accountability (associate competency evaluation)

•             Provides input to management regarding identification of individual staff skills as it relates to staff performance

•             Advances healthcare practice by applying policies, procedures, standards, and regulations as appropriate to their populations

•             Enhances professional development and quality of care through observation, verbal critique and coaching, and written appraisal of staff

•             Facilitates the integration of quality improvement activities into nursing practice

•             Identifies educational needs and opportunities using data from the organization such as regulatory requirements, survey information, employee and customer input (evaluation data)

•             Is knowledgeable of current healthcare trends

•             Utilizes evidence-based practice and adult learning theory in education and course content

•             Identifies barriers to learning and facilitates solutions to remove those barriers

•             Collaborates with department specific management/leadership, other educators, and advanced practice nurses to enhance the quality and cost effectiveness of patient care




•             Plan and facilitate education initiatives/classes/events that benefit the staff as recommended by the House-Wide Educator, in collaboration with department specific management/leadership, to include but not limited to the annual validation fair, staff orientation, residency training program, specialty practice training classes, preceptor class, and outside committee participation. Provides a monthly report of actions and decisions made related to committee participation to the house wide educator and department specific management/leadership team

•             Evaluates the quality of programs and services offered, including class evaluations and incorporation of feedback into program improvement

•             Is responsible to report course statistics, including evaluation data, attendance numbers and types, completion or success scores, etc. to house-wide educator and department specific management/leadership

•             Identifies and evaluates appropriate products, programs, and services, based upon needs assessment for populations served; for planning of or improving of educational offerings at the unit level

•             Collaborates with managers, charge nurses preceptors and staff to identify educational needs of staff regarding nursing care and/or equipment as it relates to quality patient care

•             Presents a selected topic or inservice to unit(s) a minimum of 6x/yr

•             Participates in 90% or more of the organizational clinical competency committee meetings

•             Demonstrates advanced clinical skills, judgment, and nursing process in the management of specific patient populations (area of clinical specialty) delivering high quality patient care

•             Maintains clinical competencies in areas of accountability.  When required, due to staffing levels or patient workload, functions as a unit staff nurse providing direct patient care (refer to RN (3016) job description for a list of requirements and duties)

•             Provides feedback to RN hospital educators who participate in unit, hospital, system committee/task force to maintain and improve the delivery of patient care

•             Develops, implements, and evaluates programs to address deficiencies identified in the documentation audits

•             Assists unit manager(s) with staff selection of preceptors


COST-10 %

•             Plans, evaluates, and implements program changes to maximize organizational resources and demonstrate best return on investment for the organization

•             Manages own payroll hours and time effectively to meet the expected departmental and unit outcomes

•             Responsible to work collaboratively with unit management/leadership, educators, and advanced practice nurses to enhance the quality and cost effectiveness of patient care



•             Maintains visibility on clinical units to evaluate educational and/or project outcomes

•             Utilizes principals of communication and change theory in providing health care consultation to other departments and staff; specifically in areas of training/education/program development and employee development

•             Functions as a role model for excellence in care by assisting nursing personnel with decision making in clinical situations


GROWTH -20 %

•             Ensures active advertising/marketing of educational inservices and programs throughout the organization to facilitate maximum session participation

•             Provides consultative services within area(s) of specialty to other departments as it relates to organizational education needs

•             Implements a professional self-development plan to ensure competencies in quality care, adult learning theory and personal development

•             Attend educational opportunities to promote professional development limited to those assigned by the house—wide educator and approved by the department specific management/leadership team

•             Attends 75% of staff meetings




•             Collaborates with community, state, and national resources and applicable governing boards in developing and implementing best practice in educational standards
