Job Description:
The ICU Manager is responsible for the nursing care of critically ill patients in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols of the healthcare organization. The tasks and responsibilities include:
  • Initiates change and improvements as indicated.
  • Identifies the educational needs of clinical personnel and makes recommendations for appropriate educational opportunities.
  • Investigates and analyzes patient or staff processes and intervenes to provide guidance and problem solving opportunities to insure patient care is not adversely affected.
  • Conducts concurrent audits of patient care records to determine documentation compliance of staff.
  • Monitors and educates staff on current and new metrics.
  • Demonstrates consistent awareness of individual patient conditions and unit acuity levels.
  • Assists in overseeing Departmental/ Hospital PI activity, under the direction of the Director, which includes timely collection of data, analysis, recommendations for improvement and evaluation of actions taken.
  • Observes that patients receive quality of care in accordance with federal regulations, assists with education as needed.
  • Completes concurrent chart reviews to ensure compliance with Core Measures, Risk Premium Initiatives &Hospital Initiatives
  • Explains tests, procedures, disease processes, medication and equipment to patient and family throughout the course of treatment.
  • Assists Director with patient concerns and issues. Appropriate communication to all responsible parties.
  • Ensures continuity of care through accurate and consistent communication of patient information with other departments/staff.
  • Holds 24 hour responsibility of unit.
  • Assumes responsibility during emergencies, and in the development and implementation of the Rapid Response Team. Is available to direct and guide personnel.
  • Demonstrates sound independent decision making by the ability to assess situations from a variety of perspectives, consider alternatives and choose the most appropriate course of action.
  • Demonstrates effective communication and problem solving skills with peers, subordinates and superiors and fosters teamwork.
  • Assists the Director with staffing the unit during all hours of operation.
  • Directs the Department in a manner commensurate with the mission and values of the organization.
  • Maintains appropriate staffing levels within budgeted man hours/Stat. Monitors annual budget to assure compliance.
  • Is accountable for review and balance of schedule.
  • Holds staff accountable for all aspects of their level and counsels appropriately.
  • Demonstrates systems thinking in looking at the needs of the unit as a whole.


  • Current FL RN License
  • BLS and ACLS required
  • CCRN highly preferred
  • 2-3 years of recent ICU experience
  • 3-5 years of supervisor or management experience required
  • Customer service abilities including effective listening skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be proficient in using computers
  • Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, moving, lifting of patients and/or equipment up to 50lb
