  • Reporting to the Executive Director of Cancer Research and Patient Navigation the Oncology Nurse Navigator possesses knowledge in oncology and acts as clinician, care coordinator, educator, advocate, counselor and consultant to achieve optimal outcomes. The Oncology Nurse Navigator addresses patient needs throughout the care continuum to reduce gaps in the care process and provide education (Diagnostic Phase); improve timeliness of care and coordinate complex care processes (Multidisciplinary Care); and develop plans for long term and survivorship care (Post Treatment Phase). This position provides support and guidance, linking patients and their families to healthcare services that meet their needs and serving as a communication bridge among and between patients, families and members of the cancer care team   Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Illinois . Advanced Practice Nurse Certification (Clinical Nurse Specialist). Oncology experience preferred; oncology certification desirable.   Demonstrated use of clinical skills and expertise in site specific cancer diseases, treatment options, research protocols, and psychosocial impact of disease on recovery.   Ability to comprehensively assess a patient’s physical and psychosocial status. Ability to effectively and efficiently coordinate, implement and monitor the care management process and treatment plan for patients. Ability to communicate openly and empathetically with patients and families. Ability to work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to develop and implement the care plan. Ability to develop and implement educational programs. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences including professional staff, patients, community, media and other external agencies. Knowledge of adult learning competencies and patient teaching skills.   Demonstrated management skills reflecting self motivation, initiative and fiscal responsibility. Tolerance of ambiguity and the flexibility to respond to changing system needs. Working knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Office and patient management database products. Superior written and verbal skills are essential, including the ability to communicate in easily understandable language complicated research principles to healthy volunteer study population.   Must have a working knowledge of computers, medical conditions, research techniques, and the application of clinical research.

    I understand and acknowledge that any offer of employment is contingent upon satisfactory acceptance of the annual recommended vaccination(s) for a designated influenza season when it is available. The only acceptable exceptions to this mandate at the time of hire and annually are documented medical contraindications and documented religious objections. I also understand and acknowledge that staff who decline the vaccination due to medical contraindications, religious objections or if the vaccine is unavailable due to supply constraints, will be required to wear a mask when determined to be appropriate. The timing and duration of the use of masks will be determined by the hospital along with local, regional and/or national public health authorities.
