Summary

A Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner works under the supervision of the Staff Psychiatrist or the Medical Executive Director and in accordance with established GEO Care policy and procedure as well as within the State guidelines. Maintains any documentation required by state or facility guidelines to demonstrate compliance with supervision requirements. Provides psychiatric consultation, diagnostic and treatment services to the identified patient population, including medication management and crisis intervention services

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive assessment, plan development, implementation of plan of care and evaluation of effectiveness of interventions with revisions as necessary.
  • Initiate, monitors, alters medications and treatments according to approved protocols. Demonstrates thorough understanding of all requirements and practice standards relating to the prescription, administration of medications including compliance with organization policy and procedures, documentation, requirements, medication education.
  • Monitors medication and initiates appropriate therapies for certain conditions and changes medications according to variations in a patient’s response within established protocols.
  • Observes and differentiates between signs and symptoms associated with normal human physiology and those indicative of pathological changes.
  • Documents all relevant patient care issues in patients’ progress notes and treatment plan all relevant patient care issues.
  • Includes the use of seclusion and restraint and alternative interventions, documentation requirements, disaster and fire procedures, infection control, risk management.
  • Is sensitive to cultural diversity issues, treats patients as an individual, and considers the culture of the patients when providing care and treatment.
  • Provides individualized care and treatment that is consistent with/sensitive to the age and life span developmental needs of each patient.
  • Participates in psychiatric on-call schedule if on-call services are required
  • Ensures progress note and treatment plan documentation is in specified format, problem oriented, corresponds to the therapeutic order and is legible
  • Ensures all documentation is dated, timed, legible, problem oriented and signed
  • Adheres to the established formulary for therapeutic regimens before using non-formulary procedures

  • Supports standards of psychiatric care through adherence to existing policies and procedures for admission to the infirmary and transfer to emergency room utilization review process for specialty consultant referrals
  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for his/her individual judgments and actions
  • Provides input into facility mandatory committees such as Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Quality Improvement, Patient Care Management, Medical Audit Committee, State Psychiatric Meetings/Conference calls, Mental Health Treatment Team, as requested by Staff Psychiatrist, Mental Health Coordinator, Mental Health Director, Health Services Administrator or designee
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Graduation from a nursing accredited school and certification as a Psychiatric Mental health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) in the State of Texas, as recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center Adult PMHNP certification.
  • Two (2) years’ experience as a Nurse Practitioner. Psychiatric experience preferred and/or experience in a residential healthcare institution.
  • Must maintain a current copy of license on file at the hospital at all times.
  • Able to work without direct immediate supervision in performing nursing diagnosis and provide appropriate follow up treatment.
  • Must maintain CPR certification, and any other certifications (such as First Aid) required by contract.
  • Ability to read and communicate in English

  • The ability to communicate well verbally
