Required Qualifications: Current NYS NP License, Five years Nursing Surgical/Trauma Experience. ACLS certified. Will consider new graduate.


Preferred Qualifications: Three years Nurse Practitioner experience.

Brief Description of Duties:

  • Provides direct care to selected patients under the supervision of the SICU Surgeon-in-chief and other attending General/Trauma Surgeons.
  • Performs approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for patients on the Trauma Surgery Service.
  • Provides patient care services to the surgery patient in the SICU, Surgical Units, the ED and OR under the direction of the responsible Neurosurgeon.
  • In collaboration with other Nurse Practitioners, coordinates pre-hospital evaluation for admission, schedules surgery and follow-up visits and coordinates all aspects of in-hospital care and discharge planning with the nursing, medical and hospital staff.
  • Contributes to the development for standards of care and/or care maps for surgical nursing practice with Nurse Manager & Attending for the department and nursing staff.
  • Functions in a collegial relationship with medical staff and other disciplines in coordinating all aspects of patient care.
  • Functions as a clinical preceptor for students.
  • Makes referrals to other health care providers and/or consults the physician for further definitive therapy.
  • All other duties as assigned.


Special Notes: Shift: Full-time evening position. Please note Stony Brook Medicine is a smoke free environment. All Hospital positions are subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary. This position may require the wearing of respiratory protection, which may prohibit the wearing of facial hair.
