The Certified Surgical Technologist is an allied health professional who is an integral team member providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings. The surgical technologist works under the supervision of the RN to facilitate a safe and efficient operative environment. The surgical technologist possesses expertise in theory and application of aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures and implementation of tools and technology to prepare for procedures and facilitate the physician’s performance of procedures, and initiate proper counts throughout procedure. Duties of the surgical technologist may be performed in operating rooms, ambulatory surgery areas, post anesthesia recovery room, central supply, labor and delivery, cardiac catheterization and other areas where invasive procedures are performed.


High School diploma or GED


3 years experience in surgical setting preferred


Current BLS certification required from American Heart Association

Completion of an approved course for Operating Room Technician; Surgical Tech Certification (CST Certificate)

DORA registered Surgical Tech



Assemble instruments, equipment and suture for scheduled procedure.

Prepare back table and mayo stand anticipating needs of the surgeon.

Complies with count policy when completing all counts.

Demonstrates accurate use of physician preference card and updates card as indicated with changing needs.


Prepares operating room and supplies for procedure utilizing aseptic technique.

Demonstrates proper use/documentation of the Steris and autoclave.

Terminally clean OR rooms and clean instruments if required.

Use safety technique with sharps.

Maintains aseptic technique throughout case.

Participates in Time Out Procedure prior to incision.

Ensures that work environment, equipment & supplies are clean and orderly throughout the workday.


Effectively communicates with surgeon and nursing staff, anticipating possible problems or complications that could arise during case.

Adjust quickly and prepare for emergency or emergent cases that change work flow.

Performs all duties in a conscientious, courteous and carding manner to maintain positive customer relations.

Maintains efficiency under stress and with irregular working hours.

Assists with the education of new staff and students.

Adapts to readily changing technologies, policies, regulations, census and staffing through priority setting and flexibility.
