Job Description


The School Nurse PRN provides direct nursing care to students within a school system.


  • Participates in the assessment, implementation and evaluation of student care.
  • Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate.
  • Oversees student care while at school.
  • Delegates tasks to unlicensed personnel within scope of license.
  • Participates in the surveillance and prevention of communicable diseases. Complies with reporting guidelines.
  • Educates students, family members and faculty.
  • Promotes a wellness environment and ensures the health, comfort, and safety of students.
  • Identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the student or situation using Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) standards.
  • Participates in community/school related councils, associations, task force and/or student health services focus groups.
  • Complies with guidelines for state mandated screenings and manages immunization requirements. Reviews student health information system (SHIS) entries routinely.
  • Reports suspected child abuse/neglect cases.
  • Promotes safety at the campus level through recommendations to school administration after assessment of the school for risks to safety and health.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science.
  • Six (6) years of applicable work experience is required. 
  • Related college coursework may substitute for up to (4) years of required experience on an equivalent year-for-year basis.
  • Bachelor of Science (BSN) in Nursing is preferred.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS-HCP) course completion card from the American Heart Association is required prior to hire or job transfer date.
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of Texas is required or must be obtained prior to hire or job transfer date.
