Job Description


The VAD Coordinator RN coordinates the overall interdisciplinary plan of care for patient, from admission to discharge.


  • Creates plan for care across the continuum, integrating patient/family preferences and values.
  • Monitors patient care through assessments, evaluations and/or patient records.
  • Advocates for resources and removal of barriers.
  • Maintains ongoing dialog with supervisor and other health providers to ensure effective implementation of health plan.
  • Educates patients and families who have been identified as possible candidates for VAD placement as well as educates the nursing staff in order for them to be competent in caring for the VAD patient. 
  • Provides community training by working with routine follow-up caregivers such as the patient’s local cardiologist, primary care physician, EMS, ED, and possibly home health. 
  • Provides discharge education; facilitates collaboration of multiple team members to include troubleshooting of devices, identifying proper function and alarm conditions, knowing how to respond and who and when to call for assistance. 
  • Serves as a resource and assists with troubleshooting during the post-op course in ICU. 
  • Oversees transition from ICU to step-down, preparing patient for self-care after discharge. 
  • Provides ongoing physical assessment for signs and symptoms of infection with prompt recognition and treatment, indication of change in mental status, assessment of pump pocket for pain and signs of swelling. 
  • Monitors regularly for proper device function. 
  • Conducts initial home visit to check for electrical safety, contacts the patient’s electrical company; works with the family to plan for space for equipment. 
  • May be required to obtain bioethical consult for patients or families in distress; may need to work with palliative care if patient’s condition changes.
  • Leads multidisciplinary team in defining the process of post-op care and planning for discharge, beginning prior to surgery. 
  • Conducts regular multidisciplinary team meetings, provides updates on where each patient is in the discharge process in order to keep patient hospital stays as short as possible. 
  • Assesses patient and family resources and communicates with the team; involves social workers as needs arise, especially with financial concerns. 
  • Works with dietary and nursing staff to ensure early initiation of nutrition care.
  • Manages inventory by organizing available devices and storing them appropriately. 
  • Ensures device maintenance and replacement of filters and batteries. 
  • Keeps up-to-date records.
  • Develops pre, intra, and post-op VAD management policies and protocols including end-of-life situations.
  • Identifies performance improvement opportunities for high risk, low volume patients; works with staff in the various units to address these concerns. 
  • Serves as coordinator for any research studies in connection with VAD patients.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience:

  • Three (3) years of experience is required to include one year of ICU nursing experience and two years of direct patient care experience in a VAD inpatient and/or outpatient setting required, including in-depth knowledge of ventricular assist devices.
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) required.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification is required or must be obtained prior to hire or job transfer date.
  • Basic Life Support Certification is required or must be obtained prior to hire or job transfer date.
  • CCRN Certification preferred.
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice in the state of Texas is required or must be obtained prior to hire or job transfer date.
