Division Descriptions: The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit/Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PICU/PCICU) is a 24 bed acute care unit caring for critically ill children aged newborn to 18 years.  Diagnoses vary and may include patients who have experienced trauma, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery or a variety of medical illnesses.  The latest technological therapies are utilized in the unit, including ECMO, CVVH, and Nitric Oxide administration.  A telemedicine link with an outlying facility provides critical care consultation and facilitates transport of critically ill children from throughout the Northern California region.           

Minimum Requirements: Four years recent clinical experience in a PICU preferred. External Candidtate: BSN Required. CPR Certification - PALS/ACLS preferred.           

Responsibilities: Works within the clinical scale of the Job Performance Standards to implement the nursing process.  Accountable for own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.  Provides direct patient care to a diversified patient population.  Applies experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations.  Participates in patient and staff education.  Demonstrates leadership skills.           

Requirements: Possession of valid California RN license.  Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.  Passing of UCDMC Performance Demonstration, Policy Review and Medication Exam.           

Special Requirements: Ability to work overtime, float to other areas and work weekends and holidays.  Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English language and utilize medical terminology appropriately.  Continued ability to meet Clinical Nurse II job performance criteria.  Ability to set priorities and organize work.  Judgment skills to make independent clinical decisions in patient care matters.  Skill to work accurately and quickly under pressure.  Knowledge of medications, indications, dosage ranges, side effects, and potential toxicity.  Ability to safely lift 25 lbs. and assist in moving patients, and stand on feet over extended periods.  Ability to teach clinical skills.  Knowledge of legal implications for clinical practice.  Knowledge of performance improvement and research process.
