The Senior Nurse Manager, Quality, Education and Research is responsible for the management of oncology quality and performance improvement; education of oncology staff in collaboration with the Education Department through the promotion of nursing and cancer research through evidenced based practice, presentations and publications. This includes, but is not limited to, the management of: performance improvement projects, quality monitoring, regulatory compliance and reports, core measures, patient safety goals and survey preparation.
The Senior Nurse Manager, Quality, Education, Research collaborates with multiple professionals to support and coordinate the provision / management of quality, education and research. He or she works closely with the Senior Director of Oncology Nursing, Physician Leadership and staff in insuring that the Service maintains the highest standards of quality patient care and staff competency.
Senior Director of Oncology Nursing
Directing quality, education and research activities to promote excellence in nursing practice consistent with the mission of the hospital and the nursing profession.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
1. Management of Quality and Performance Improvement:
a. Develops, implements, and maintains professional and hospital standards to support outcomes-based care and evidence-based practice.
b. Insures that the overall patient management program supports patient, unit and clinical service objectives, patient management, and excellence in the delivery of patient care services.
c. Develops, implements and oversees a quality initiatives program that promotes both clinical service and financial excellence.
d. Works closely with leadership throughout the Service, Nursing Department and other hospital departments to insure that the highest expections of all regulatory and professional standards are met.
e. Demonstrates integral involvement in the Nursing Department PI/QA program. Facilitate the monthly Tisch Cancer Institute Committee
f. Maintains, reviews and updates all specialty policies in accordance with hospital, professional and regulatory standards.
g. Supports the overall strategic goals of the Hospital, the Tisch Cancer Institute and Nursing.
h. Identifies, responds to and investigates potential and actual risk management issues.
i. Participates in Special Review Committee and collaborates with other disciplines to identify opportunities for improving patient outcomes, reduce future risk and enhance customer satisfaction.
j. Supports the clinical leadership in the development of interdisciplinary and nursing standards relevant to the scope of practice.
2. Management of Nursing Education:
a. Assesses staff educational needs and develops in-service and specialized clinical training initiatives in collaboration with the Oncology Nurse Educator, the Clinical Nurse Managers and Nursing Education.
b. Provides individual and group education as needed.
c. Develops programs based on professional standards, (ONS, ASCO, CoC), performance improvement data and regulatory agencies such as JCAHO.
d. Supports nursing education and preceptorships, providing an optimal learning environment for nursing staff and affiliated students.
e. Insures all personnel are appropriately credentialed, competent and complete ongoing educational programs as required.
3. Management of Nursing Research & Clinical Trials Nursing:
a. Establishes standards and provides education to insure the safe and accurate administration of cancer related clinical trials by oncology nurses in ambulatory and inpatient settings.

b. Collaborates with TCI Clinical Trials Office and other investigators to facilitate the clinical trials process in ambulatory and inpatient settings.
c. Maintains list of actively accruing oncology clinical trials.
d. Encourages scholarship and research through the development of evidence-based practice, promoting a spirit of inquiry among nursing staff; promotes clinical and nursing research.
e. Participates in the Nursing Research Committee. Establishes and chairs a Nursing Research sub-Committee for oncology.
f. Promotes and supports nursing research and publication through individual and group mentoring and provides needed education on the process for both.
g. Acts as a resource for development of research and/or articles for publication and presentations.
h. Collaborates with other departments where feasible in the development of nursing research projects.
4. Professional Development:
a. Membership in Oncology nursing and health related professional organizations.
b. Participates in hospital committees and other forums, advancing both professional nursing practice and the patient unit / services.
c. Remains current in legislative, ethical, regulatory and clinical practice issues.
d. Attends continuing education forums and obtains CEUs in Nursing or health-related topics.
