Skokie, Illinois: DOUBLE PROGRAM: "Who Stole the Arms of Venus de Milo" and "The Long Conversation"

What did the ancients mean when they said that only the Muses can heal a broken heart, that only beauty and art can heal sorrow? This multimedia lecture uses the profound mythological, psychological, and cultural symbolism of the most famous sculpture in history, the Venus de Milo, as the leaping point into an exploration of the way her story continues to influence us in the on-going debate about beauty and the sublime, love and desire, eroticism and pleasure, and even justice and jealousy. It explores how love and beauty (art, etc.) are traditional ways to heal illness, fear, violence, war, and other traumas. The second program, "The Long Conversation" is about how during medieval times, dicussing timeless issues (birth, death, love, hate, the search for meaning) was considered to be participation in "the long conversation," the discussion of things that have always mattered. Phil Cousineau will screen four short excerpts from Global Spirit, the 10-part series he is hosting on LINK TV, that cover topics of illness, healing, ritual, and art. The presentation will explore how this series is a vital example of how the "new media" is fostering community and global out-reach. COST: $25 (flat fee), includes both programs and buffet.
