Sacramento, California: Nurses in Nuclear Cardiology: A Leadership Role

What do advances in pharmacologic stress mean for the cardiology nurse? Join us for presentations by leaders in the field of nuclear cardiology and dinner to find out. Physician and nurse experts will discuss the latest innovations in pharmacologic stress as well as preparing patients for radionuclide imaging. This program was created as part of Astellas’ commitment to nuclear cardiology nurses. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Nurses play a key role in the process of myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI)—from scheduling through image acquisition. They are generally responsible for patient preparation and education. They also often lead the patient through the entire process, providing continued direction and support. Because Lexiscan requires no pump infusion and has a faster administration than the other vasodilators, healthcare professionals will need to assess how it fits into current protocols. This program will familiarize nurses with Lexiscan, its administration, and appropriate patient preparation. For more information, visit http://www.nuclearnurse.com.

Coming Together and Making it Work The DNP and PhD Role on November, 19, 2009 6-9 p.m. pre registration required. Contact Info: CANP, Greater Pasadena Chapter Sophia Lam, Membership Chair and Corresponding Secretary CANP, Greater Pasadena Chapter POB 5364 Pasadena, California 91107-0364 Email: Please email any questions or to inquire about pre-registration for this event at info@canppasadena.org or canppasadena@gmail.com Website Address: http://www.canppasadena.org Phone: Voicemail (626) 432-4005 Evolutionary changes are occurring in both nursing research and clinical practice that aim to bridge the relationship between research of discovery and translational research (evidence-based practice) to advance nursing practice and science. The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) prepared nurses have significant yet distinct roles that contribute to the developing, evolving, and unique body of knowledge necessary to advance nursing research through the nursing research process. For modern day nurse researchers to improve nursing practice, research, and education, there must be a synergistic relationship between DNP and PhD nursing leaders not only to generate external evidence through rigorous research but to ensure that research findings are rapidly incorporated into practice to provide high quality patient care. This educational program will provide a brief historical overview of nursing doctoral education which lays the foundation for the present focus where nursing has two terminal degrees: the doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) and the doctor of philosophy (PhD). Panel members will lead a discussion on the philosophical and academic differences of the DNP and PhD; address the conflicts and controversies surrounding research doctorate and practice doctorate prepared nurses; and describe how both doctoral degrees serve to compliment the nursing profession through scholarship and clinical practice. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1.Provide a brief historical overview of doctoral nursing education that examines the relationships of Master’s, Practice Doctorate, and Research Doctorate Programs. 2.list and compare the differences between practice -focused and research -focused doctoral education. 3.Identify the benefits of practice-focused and research-focused doctoral programs. 4.Discuss doctoral education in nursing and the application of scholarly nursing practice that both DNP and PhD graduates and academic roles create in practice and scientific inquiry. The California Association of Nurse Practitioners-Greater Pasadena Chapter along with nurse researchers Dr. Aja Tulleners Lesh, Dean of Azusa Pacific University-School of Nursing, Azusa, CA; Dr. Robin Nelson, Dean of the College of Health and Human Services and Director of the DNP Program at Touro University Nevada, Henderson, NV; Dr. Ellen Daroszewski, DNP Director, Western University of Health Sciences, Pomona, CA; and Dr. Eva A. Meyers, Lead Nurse Practitioner, Health Screening & Education, Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA will lead a panel discussion on DNP and PhD roles and issues. Each panel member brings a wealth of nursing experience, knowledge, scholarship as recognized leaders within the nursing profession. Moderating the discussion is Donna Emanuele, DNP(c), FNP-BC, Antelope Valley Hospital-Emergency Services, Lancaster, CA and serves as the legislative advocate for the Health Care Policy and Practice Committee for CANP and legislative coordinator for the Greater Pasadena Chapter. The conference is open to all CANP and associate members and anyone interested in the learning about terminal doctoral degrees for nursing, including nurse educators, administrators, health care professionals, policy makers, and representatives from institutes of higher education. Antelope Valley Emergency Medical Associates of Lancaster, California are the conference sponsors, comprised of Emergency Department physicians; employing nurse practitioners and physician assistants among other health care professionals to provide and deliver emergency, minor illness and primary care services to the Antelope Valley community. For the past twenty-five years they have served as physician champions instrumental in developing alternative models of health care delivery utilizing nurse practitioners as effective health care providers in this specialty setting with enormous success and acceptance. Pre-registration is now open to attend this educational event and recommended in order to secure your reservation for what promises to be an exciting and informative presentation.
