Objectives
The goal of this program is to update nurses’ ability to identify and report child abuse. The completion of this module satisfies New York State’s two-hour mandatory training requirement for RNs on the subject of child abuse.

After you study the information presented here, you will be able to —

  • Define what constitutes abuse, maltreatment, and neglect, and identify the corresponding physical and behavioral indicators.
  • Recognize the behavioral and environmental characteristics of abusive parents or caretakers.
  • List the physical and behavioral indicators of sexual abuse.
  • Describe what constitutes “reasonable cause to suspect” abuse and identify situations when nurses must report suspected cases.

  • Identify the legal protections afforded reporters and the consequences for failing to report.
